LYDGATE STATE PARK
Need a safe swim on Kauai Head over to Lydgate State Park on the east shore, where massive volcanic rock boulders block the heavy ocean surf and create two calm pools. Little kids swim safely here. Bright yellow tangs and parrotfish dart through the rock gaps, giving you a front-row seat to sea life without fighting strong currents. It rules for snorkeling. Lifeguards patrol the beach daily, and shower facilities sit right near the sand.
Ocean pools are just the start. Just up from the shoreline sits Kamalani Playground, a giant wooden structure full of bridges, slides, and secret climbing towers that community volunteers built. Kids lose their minds here. Then you have the multi-use coastal path cutting through the area, giving runners and cyclists miles of paved trail with ocean views. Pack a lunch. Grab a picnic table and spend the whole afternoon.
