LINCOLNS NEW SALEM STATE PARK
LINCOLNS NEW SALEM STATE PARK
Imagine walking right into 1835. Before Abe Lincoln ever wore the famous top hat or saved the Union, he was just a gangly twenty-something flopping at a local boarding house and failing at running a general store in central Illinois. You can actually walk through that exact timber village today. It isn't a glossy museum. Volunteers in rough linsey-woolsey clothes split oak logs, shoe horses at the blacksmith forge, and cook cornmeal over open hearth fires that smell like hickory smoke. It gets muddy. You hear the thud of the axe before you even see the cabins.
People head out to New Salem mostly to get off their phones and see where Lincoln figured out his life. He read borrow law books under oak trees here. You can duck your head under the low doorframes of twenty-three rebuilt log buildings, including the Rutledge Tavern where Abe ate dinner and the store where he measured out lard and gunpowder. Kids love the draft oxen roaming around. But honestly, just standing in the quiet brush near the Sangamon River gives you a real feel for how rough prairie life was back then. Worth the drive.
