KIOWA COUNTY STATE PARK
Kiowa County State Park really comes down to fishing and absolute quiet. Most folks around here just call it Kiowa State Fishing Lake. The lake itself spans about 50 acres of water, though that number shrinks whenever a dry Kansas summer sets in. You go there to fish. Channel catfish, largemouth bass, and crappie hide out around the shoreline structure and old brush piles. No fancy marinas here. Just a basic gravel boat ramp and peaceful water with an unhurried, no-wake rule.
Hunters take over parts of the surrounding grass when fall rolls around. Migrating ducks dump into the shallows, while quail and pheasant tuck into the prairie cover along the property boundaries. Then there are the camping options. Or lack of them, honestly. Do not expect paved RV pads, electric hookups, or spotless modern bathhouses. It offers strictly primitive camping, meaning a handful of basic fire rings and picnic tables sitting in the dirt near the water's edge. Pitch a tent under the trees. Watch the stars.
The real draw is dodging the crowds. You will not fight fifty other boats for an inlet or trip over someone else's tackle box. People back their trucks right up near the bank, drop the tailgate, and let a bobber float for hours. Nothing flashy at all. Just wind, open grassland, and a bare-bones fishing hole that keeps things simple.
