THREE ISLAND STATE PARK
Pioneers hated this spot. Back in the mid-1800s, emigrants traveling the Oregon Trail hit the Snake River right here at Glenns Ferry and had to make a brutal decision. Risk drowning their oxen to cross the deep, swift water using three gravel bars, or take the dusty south route instead It was terrifying. So, if you dig American history, this place is wild. The Oregon Trail History Center on-site lets you read actual diary entries from travelers who barely survived the river crossing. You can even walk right up to authentic wagon ruts still carved into the ground.
History isn't the only draw, though. You can camp under giant shade trees in one of their full-hookup RV loops, or grab a cozy air-conditioned cabin if you hate tent stakes. The river isn't just for historical staring either. People fish for catfish and smallmouth bass, or paddle kayaks when the water calms down. Disc golf fan They built an 18-hole course right on the park grounds. Kids love it. Mule deer wander straight through the campsites at dusk, and coyotes howl across the water after dark.
