BUTLER COUNTY STATE PARK
Nobody bugs you out here. Most folks rush straight past Latham to crowd into the massive reservoir at El Dorado, but they miss out on this 124-acre lake entirely. Just calm water and bluestem grass. I usually back my beat-up truck toward the gravel ramp at dawn to haul out crappie and channel catfish along the eastern riprap. The bass hit hard, too. You don't need a fancy boat to pull a decent stringer out of the brush piles.
Forget about luxury amenities. You get basic dirt pull-offs, vault toilets that smell like cedar shavings, and simple metal fire rings tucked into the scrub trees. Zero RV hookups in sight. So when the prairie wind dies down at twilight, you sit on a cooler and watch bats dive across the water without hearing some neighbor's generator rattling through the trees. Then the coyotes start howling. That gritty, stripped-down isolation is the whole point of making the drive out.
